Are you a true crime junkie?
Can you imagine yourself in the field of criminal justice or emergency services?
West Haven High School’s Criminal Justice Cohort prepares students for careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, forensic science, emergency services or legal studies.
Students who join the cohort take True Crime, Algebra 2 with Forensic Applications, Introduction to Criminal Justice, and Introduction to Forensic Science.
Students who successfully complete the first year of the cohort can then take Race, Class and Gender in Criminal Justice and Advanced Forensic Science.
In each class, students will study criminal investigations, legal issues in the criminal justice system, and crime scenes.
The Cohort invites speakers to talk to students about careers in the criminal justice field including: detectives, police officers, FBI agents, cyber security experts, a DEEP officer, and corrections officers.
Students in the cohort also participate in field trips like attending a session of criminal court, a Law Enforcement job fair and using deductive reasoning skills to escape the room.
The program was created through a partnership with the University of New Haven, allowing the possibility for students to earn six college credits while still in high school, along with three college credits from Southern Connecticut State University.
So if you’re interested in a career as a police officer, lawyer, forensic scientist or any other job in criminal justice, talk to your school counselor.
The application to join the cohort is available online in the School Counseling Google Classroom page.
